Lloyd, thanks for visiting. You are right, the key is to do it safely but not let that overide the value of pushing yourself to a "reasonable" extreme. That's a fine line but with qualified coaching/watching you (like a black belt) it is achievable.

Marc -

I know from my own experiences as a long distance runner that we can push ourselves well beyond the point where the Princess kicks in. We're gifted with an unbelievably strong survival instinct and ability to perform under pressure. This definitely extends to every day life - it is easy to put off something that appears "too hard". I like your questions and framework for finding out what is behind that laziness. When we stop being a Princess, everything is possible. Great post, sir (and love the picture).

Phil

I agree I find that training exhaustion, when done safely can opens new doors of self learning and awareness on so many levels.

One of the most extensible lessons that I have learned from martial arts is to identify a person's motivation. Not only do you want to know what someone is doing in order to modify the outcome, you would do well to learn why as well. If someone's acting like a princess, try to figure out the why - then attack that, not their token response.

Good article!

PS I'm belt testing in a new system tomorrow and I'll try to leave my tiara at home!
