Thank you Patty for you kind words. I don't think saying to "live and work in a creative and adventurous way" is feeble. It sounds like it is an important to how you want to live your life. At least you recognize and know this, a lot of people don't spend time figuring out what is important to them. Also, don't feel like what I have written here needs to be used as a comparison to what you have done or will do. The purpose is simply to get everyone thinking in another way, so I am glad you are inspired.

Ben, your code is great. Simple yet meaningful. I especially like #5, much better to focus your energy into productive areas of life for yourself or others.

Marc, I love Bushido. You're post is something close to my heart.

My personal code of conduct which I've had had for a few years now includes,

1. Patience
2. Courage
3. Focus
4. Serve others
5. I don't play with crap (ie I don't engage in things that are harmful to me)

Good post Marc. I genuinely believe that we should all have a code of conduct

Wow, Marc, I'm going to echo everyone else and say I just think your code of conduct is stunning. It's way more than mission statement and so beautifully expresses who you are and how much you care about others and the world around you. I've made some feeble attempts at something similar, but it was mostly stuff like, "live and work in a creative and adventurous way." Kind of pales in comparison to yours, so I'm inspired! Thanks.

Hi Belinda - thanks for visiting, I appreciate your kind words. Definitely don't know what to make of the politics of the climate bill but we all can certainly do things now without any direction from DC. What I am doing isn't even political, its just responsible. Hopefully others will follow.

Hi Marc, this is my first visit here, clicking over from Patty - Why Not Start Now. I think your code of conduct is wonderful. One of my favorite people said recently that life can be overwhelming if we're conscious and aware and setting parameters for ourselves that help keep us on our chosen path is so helpful in this free-for-all climate we share.
I'm struck by your genuine appeal at the end to keep you honest. What a great example you set for us: as you teach, so you shall learn.
Lastly, I see that you're also in San Francisco like me so #5 is almost automatic for me as well. It doesn't look like the climate bill will pass this year which makes our collective effort to save our planet more critical than ever before. Thanks.

@Phil - That's great that you have a framework already. The name is less important than the purpose behind it. I find what you say to be very interesting in terms of my external focus. It is precisely this external focus that puts it back on me. That's the real self improvement lesson, thanks for point that out. Right now I am focused on the first one "An Obligation to Teach Others" which is what this blog is all about. Thanks for your insightful comments here.

@markwschaefer - Well, I am honored that a Nepalese Trained Ninja would come to my site - thank you :) Yeah, lot's of behaving badly going on, but that's OK, nobody is perfect. Thanks for coming by.

Marc, this article is so needed and so timely. I just had a long conversation about bloggers behaving badly and this piece should be required reading. Thanks!!

Mark -

I call my rules for life principles, however they form a code of conduct for me. I think yours are wonderful because of the focus on others and the world around you. I agree that focusing on one area at a time brings real rewards. Which area are you starting with? For me, I'm focusing on my first principal - Life is precious, make the most of every moment.

Thanks for a great post,

Phil
